Red on handle and base came off with first washingNov 21, 2010
By Anita A. Brengle After receiving the pitcher and removing it from its packaging, we washed it gently as directed in the included instructions. The red decorative plastic film around the base and on the handle immediately began to flake off.

Red trim/paint came offSep 17, 2011

"happy shopper"
While this is one gorgeous pitcher, the red paint came off the first time I washed it even though I washed it in cold water. So disappointing! I sent it back and refused to try another one. Why repeat a mistake!

Winterberry's without the berriesJan 03, 2011
By tanyac I ordered this item to go along with the rest of the dishes and glasses that I bought from Macy's last year. I took the pitcher out of the box and rinsed it off so that we could use it for Christmas dinner. While I was washing the pitcher the red on the handle and around the bottom of the pitcher started to flake off in my hand. Pretty soon the pitcher no longer had any red left. The berries washed off and the bottom edge and the handle only had red residue. I also bought the water glasses at the same time and while my guests were drinking out of them the berries started to come off the glasses because of the condensation forming on the outside of the glass. I did not have this problem with the glasses that I bought at Macy's last year for the same price. I am very disappointed with the product and will not be buying again from this vendor. I will stick with Macy's.

The red paint flakes and peels off when you wash the pitcher.Jan 03, 2011
By BK I have the Winterberry holiday dishes, a service for eight. I was delighted when I saw that Pfaltzgraff has a water pitcher in the Winterberry pattern. So I purchased one. After I opened the box, I washed the pitcher by hand and the red paint on the handle and the base began to flake and peel off. I was so disappointed. I contacted Amazon.com and they said return it and they would send another one. My, that was easy. No problems. I had the new pitcher before I had even taken the old damaged one to UPS. Much to my disappointment the same thing happened. The paint started to peel and flake off. I had not put it in the dishwasher. I was just using soap and water. To make the pitcher usable to me I purposely flaked off the remaining red paint on the handle and base. I then called the Pfaltzgraff number they provided if you have a problem. I told the representative my story about the flaking paint. She said the company has been told about it and they are aware of it. No mention was made of a recall, nor was there any talk about a discount on the remaining pitcher I had. Basically they said "tough luck" I will not buy anything by Pfaltzgraff again.

Faulty Paint Job on Pfaltzgraff Pitcher?Jan 20, 2011
By Ryan M. Wallace Pfaltzgraff Winterberry 2-1/2-Quart Glass Water Pitcher
I purchased the Pfaltzgraff Winterberry 2 1/2 Qt Glass Water Pitcher as a holiday gift for a family member. I believe this item has defective paint as the "holly berry" paint flecks began to move around freely when the pitcher was filled with ice water. Additionally, when hand washing the pitcher after use, the red paint from the base and handle began to peel off in chips and sheets.
Over the past few years, I've purchased many items from this Pfaltzgraff set (typically directly from a Macy's or JC Penny retail store) including the dessert plates and wine glasses which are decorated in the same manner as this pitcher. Since I've handled the stemware and plates before, I'm familiar with the quality of the hand etched and painted items. After use, I've always hand washed (in mild Dawn dish detergent and warm water) and hand dried with a standard dish towel.
On Christmas day, the gift was unwrapped and hand washed (in the manner above) so that could be used at dinner. During dinner, I noticed the holly berries were starting to run down the side of the pitcher due to the condensation of the ice water on the outside of the pitcher. I emptied it out and let it stand dry as to not do further damage to the pitcher. With the holly berries back in place (I used my finger to slide them back to where they were), I again hand washed the pitcher. When I began to dry it, the red paint from the base and handle began to peel off onto the towel and came off to the touch of the palm of my hand.
I've reordered the product from Amazon and hope that I just received a defective unit and that this next one is better. I'll update this post again once I've put the pitcher through the same tests.
